The herd moves together across open savanna — a collective departure, unhurried, the social unit intact. Six, seven, eight animals or more, compressed by distance into a single body moving as one toward the treeline and the hill beyond.

Traveling back to camp that morning, the herd appeared without warning. I stayed still. Minimal movement. Elephants are protective animals and some in this herd were large — I was closer than I would have planned. They moved around me, unhurried, as if I wasn't there. The matriarch and the next largest paused nearby, assessed, then continued. No aggression. A decision made and unmade in seconds. Then the herd gathered itself and walked on.

Shot on film, the rolls were processed separately — different days, different times. The memory of the morning came before the images did. It wasn't until the sequence came back together that I knew what I had — and edition of “Eight Elephants” revealed itself.

Edition: Each limited edition print is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies every print. Once the edition sells out it is permanently retired. This edition is strictly limited to 50 prints.

About the Artist: Harry Johansing is a California-based photographer with a life spent with a camera — self-taught, experimental, working across film and digital. His photography has taken him across California, Mexico, Central America, and sub-Saharan Africa. His prints are held in private collections internationally, including those of noted public figures and working artists.
