This limited edition work combines black-and-white photography with hand-applied India ink marginalia.
The photograph was taken in South Africa in 2019, capturing a moment of uneasy proximity: hyenas attempting to drink from a water source guarded by an elephant. After repeated failed attempts, the hyenas turned to a nearby mud puddle—an outcome reflected quietly within the image.
In 2024, handwritten marginalia was added using a dip pen and India ink.
The text reads:
“oh elephant, elephant is royal.
We are not royal.
We are beggars.”
The markings function as annotation rather than illustration—an extension of observation, not commentary. The piece sits between document and reflection, allowing the scene to remain unresolved.
