Title: Art of Acceptance is Being a Window and a Boot (2021)

This image captures the quiet poetry of a single boot resting on a weathered window — an accidental still life of time and endurance. I came across the scene one quiet afternoon, as if the boot had chosen its resting place, content to simply be. It felt like a small monument to acceptance — an unplanned harmony between what’s worn and what remains.
Of all my photographs, this is the one I’ve wrestled with the longest. Over two years, I returned to it again and again — printing, pausing, making artist proofs — never quite satisfied, yet unable to let it go. In the end, that struggle became part of the work itself. What began as a photograph became a meditation on patience, imperfection, and the quiet art of learning to see things as they are.

Art of Acceptance is Being a Window and a Boot is printed at actual size to preserve the intimacy and honesty of the original moment. At life scale, the piece invites viewers to step into the moment — or create a new one — seeing the worn wood, chipped paint, and single boot as they truly appeared. This approach turns the photograph into an encounter rather than an image — a quiet meditation on presence, impermanence, and the beauty of things as they are.

Artist’s Note

This photograph tested my patience and my understanding of what it means to “finish” something. I must have made more artist proofs of this piece than any other I’ve ever printed. For nearly two years I returned to it — adjusting tone, texture, balance — never quite able to let it rest. Somewhere in that process, I realized that acceptance wasn’t just the subject of the work; it was the lesson the work was teaching me.
