Coming back to the car after shooting skateboarding in Venice Beach, I looked up. High tops strung across the wire like musical notations, their shadows drifting across the stucco wall behind them. The clouds had opened up above. It was all there — the fence, the wall, the sky, the shoes — a quiet urban performance that had been going on without an audience until that moment.
